RE: Bathroom cabinet tri-light dead

some of the new Chineese bulbs solder nibs on the base of the bulb are not high enough to make good contact. Most of the bulb holders now used are also made in China and its not unsual for the springs that push the contacts to the bulb contacts to be very weak and take a set. Either one or a combination of the two can give you problem. The best way is to check with a voltmeter or test light at the bulb holder contacts, no power there most likley a blown fuse.

RE: WOW, they are reading what we post.....

I bought my fifth wheel from Sunland Rv in Las Cruces NM. It is one of the dreaded Thor Mirages. After four years and about 20,000 miles only problems I have had are as follows. 1. Control panel went out. 2.Defective outside shower. 3.Some problems with the dump valve cabels. 4. 2 blow outs US made tires. I fixed all of the problems except the control panel and shower myself. The trailer was out of warranty about 6 months when the panel and shower went bad. I contacted Sunland about them any way. They couldn't do any thing about it they said but would give me a name that was higher in rank at Thor of Califorinia, than usual coustomer service. I called Thor (I can't remember the name of the lady I talked to) the next day Sunland got the panel and I received a whole new shower compartment instead of the small part I needed for the shower head the following day. I can't speak for their repair dept. I do most of my work myself. I do think they went out of their way to help me when they wern't obliged to. Don't know if I would buy from them again but they would sure get a chance to sell me another.

RE: How to approach a steep downhill and uphill

Really check it out. Getting a trailer hung up that long is a real mess. I've seen it happen several times here. Will usually tear the rear end up really bad if it's hung up. Most of the damage occurs when it is pulled out backwards by a wrecker. I have seen the whole back end pulled out. Also trying to back-up a steep hill on a dirt or gravel road can be impossible even in 4 wheel drive. Don't get yourself trapped.

RE: propane ice boxes

Run it on electric for over night before you leave, then 12 volt if you have it, can also run it on propane while traveling, I do, some feel it's not safe but I've been doing it for 30 years with no problems.

RE: prep for plastic painting

Don't use acetone it's a solvent-cement for most plastics, denatured alcohal, as mentioned, or plain old mineral spirits will work fine.

RE: Birds in the pin box

I went to Wal-Mart and bought a large car washing spounge, it fits tightly and I have a large spounge if I need it while camping. Once in a while yellow jackets will try to nest in there, small pices of Gorilla Tape over any spare bolt holes took care of them.

RE: generator clearance

I use one of those carrier racks on the back of my trailer. I had a custom receiver hitch put on my fifth wheel as soon as I bought it. The rack is rated for 500 lb and I carry my generator (4200 watt)gas and any thing else that may be dirty there.

RE: locking 5th wheel

I had one of Them 9mm. We pulled into my son-in-laws drive with the fith wheel. Parked and spent the night in the trailer. Woke up in the morning to find the window in the truck broken out. The 9 was gone alung with 2 cell phones, My Goog Sam card and some Wal-Mart gift cards. All this was done while we were asleep with the windows open. There was a good ending to all this. The crook called a few friends and his mother on my cell phone and the police traced the numbers. Got everything back except the gas cards and one cell phone.Took a full year to get the pistol back, had to keep it for evidence etc.Still my hats off to the Mesa Az. Police dept.Found the crook in less than a week.

RE: Pulling 5th into Colorado for Christmas. Advise?

Forecast for the 21st. is snow in northern New Mexico which would include Abq. Santa Fe, Raton and Taos, actually the forecast includes southwestern New Mexico but only light snow and rain. We were heading for Mesa Az. the 21st. but due to the forecast we are leaving the 20th. You might think about Ruidoso, NM. I-10 to El Paso then up to Alamogordo, NM to Ruidoso these roads are nearly always clear and there are no bad pulls on them. Nice Ski area and casino, Inn of The Mountain Gods and Ski Apache at Ruidoso also ski area at Cloudcroff. Both easy access from Alamogordo.

RE: Alternative to Camping World?

I only buy from Camping World in their stores. Their shipping is to costly and they now charge sales tax for internet purchases. Like others have said you can usually find what you need on e-bay for about half of what they charge.

RE: Do you live better in your rv than your home

When we bought our fifth wheel I bought all new cooking ware, Pots Pans, silverware ect. DW did the same for the bed and bath area, all new linens, towels, pillows etc. Flat screen tv and much more. We still camp in many of the same places we did 40 years ago. Kinda neat to be there and reminese about when we were there in a 10 X 16 tent with three kids, 2 dogs using old wore out cooking equipt. Cooking over a fire and with a pump up stove. Bedding was old blankets over a pine needle mattress. Both were great times. but at this stage in my life I don't want to go back.

RE: Best place to locate FW connection in TV bed

I see by your profile you have a chev. if it came with the towing package it will already have the wire in place for a fifth wheel, at least mine did. Mine was bundled just about a foot in front of the driver side rear tire. I just drilled the proper sized hole about a foot infront of the rear tire in the inter bed wall. And connected the wires, they are paralled with the rear trailer connection at the factory. Easy installation.

RE: Do you leave your campsite/trailer while boondocking in CO?

We have been boondocking New Mexico, Arizona and old Mexico for over 40 years. Only lock up if gone at night. Had a coffee pot taken in Mexico once, that's all. In our part of the woods if you see a tent, trailer or camp of any kind you can assume the owner is armed and 90% of the time you will be correct. Most crooks won't risk getting caught.

RE: Bear encounters

We camped in an Arizona campground a few years ago where a black bear would come to camp every day at 3:00 pm. At 2:30 All the men would get togeather and run it back up the mountain. This July at Durango we had a black bear visit every morning just before daylight. These were more novel than dangerous. When I camped the wilderness areas had several bear encounters. I guess I have been lucky never had an agressive bear encounter.Never the less any bear visit should be taken serious. Use the precautions listed above and you will be ok.

RE: co-owning vs one owner

I've been on one partnership and for us it worked out ok but it was an airplane. Besides the reasons the others have given we consider ours an extension of our home. We have pictures a few plants and many other personal items that are left in the fifth wheel. I don't think we would like sharing the things we have, Bathroom, kitchen, bedding, towels etc.

RE: Anyone ever tried this.

The tires were nearly 4 years old, less than 15,000 miles, The brand All American (never heard of them), made in USA, 235-85-R16 load range E.First blow-out going into Durango Co. Tires were checked at 80 psi 100 miles from Durango. No water in any holding tanks. Not over loaded. Second blow-out east of Mesa AZ, 2 months later, complete tread seperation. Air pressure was 80 psi checked just before leaving Mesa. Holding tanks empty. Have replaced all 4 tires and the spare.

Anyone ever tried this.

After two blowouts this summer. I got to thinking about reinforceing my fender wells. I have plenty of clearance to put 3/4 in plywood above the tires in the fender wells. I realize this might not protect the finder skirts but would give the floor some more protection.

RE: How safe are we????

Actually a surge protector is of little use protecting from lighting. It is more for slight voltage spikes normal to many electrical distribution systems. When I worked for the electric company customers who were worried about lighting were always told for some real protection they would need a lighting arrestor. Cost is more but so is the protection. Even with an arrestor you may not get 100% protection. I have lost two TVs and a computer to lighting all on surge protectors, one TV the lighting came in through the underground coax. Also the poster that said a fiberglass sided rv would be more likley for damage. That would be true if they were wood framed. My trailer and most other fiberglass sided RVs have an alluminum frame which provides a metel frame around you. When I worked in electricity we always thought the safest place during a storm was inside an electrical substation.
